Rescue on tough terrain.

The Unimog U 4023 in operation as an emergency vehicle.

When firefighters are called to disaster areas, help organisations with their rescue vehicles tend to be called for. But most rescue vehicles with chassis for normal roads reach their limits where the Unimog rescue vehicle really comes into its own. Whether floods, snow or unpaved roads – the Unimog U 4023 can tackle any terrain.

There's no stopping it.

Whether in the forests or in the mountains – wherever people get into difficulties in impassable conditions, a robust, reliable vehicle is called for. The Unimog U 4023 combined with the Strobel rescue body is ideal for use in tough conditions.

Torque tube-guided portal axles with differential lock, tyre pressure control system, all-wheel drive and the extremely torsionally strong frame make it possible. Its approach/departure angles are 44° at the front axle and 51° at the rear axle. The tipping angle is 38°. Also, the special rescue vehicle can navigate water up to 1.2 m deep, meaning it can be used in flood-hit areas. A Euro VI diesel engine drives the Unimog, providing 170 kW/231 hp output. The vehicle which can weigh up to 10.3 t can thus reach a top speed of 89 km/h on roads.

Extensive medical equipment.

The box body is from System Strobel in Aalen in the south of Germany. Strobel, a body specialist for rescue vehicles, adapted the underbody design to the particular dimensions of the Unimog chassis. Rescue crews can effortlessly load and unload Stollenwerk stretchers using the automated air-sprung load platform and the electric loading/unloading system. The attachment can be easily reached via steps at the rear of the vehicle.

Unimog as fire service and disaster relief vehicle

The medical equipment of the box body is similar to that of an intensive care transport vehicle. State-of-the-art respiration technology, two perfusors, ECG/defibrillator, emergency rucksack, spineboard, scoop stretcher and litter are all aboard the Unimog rescue vehicle. Also, the emergency box body is linked to the driver's cab with both image and sound. To provide electricity to the vehicle's drive system and box body, there are two batteries, each with a charger. The special signalling system is a Hänsch DBS 3000.

If you wish to experience the Unimog as a rescue vehicle yourself, you can do so at RETTmobil 2017. The leading European fair for rescue and mobility is open from 10 to 12 May, for the 17th time in Fulda. The Unimog rescue vehicle is on show at the Strobel stand.

Mercedes-Benz Special Trucks is presenting the Unimog U 5023 fire engine and water tender 3000 VARUS 4x4 at RETTmobil. The off-road pro has just what you need, when and where you need it: torsional flexibility, high ground clearance, fording depth of up to 1.20 m, heat protection, a round roof hatch and the new automatic tirecontrol plus central tire inflating system ex factory. The U 5023 with TLF 3000 firefighting equipment has a one-piece Schlingmann body in QuadraVA design in stainless steel and aluminium. Also there will be: the Unimog U 4023 with a crewcab. Visitors to the fair can see it in action on an off-road course. The Unimog U 4023 with crewcab provides space for a total of seven people. Handholds in the ceiling and a stable horizontal padded steel pipe in front of the front seat give occupants stability. This means the vehicle can be used for large-scale operations.
